Tropical Storm Alberto- Macon Flood of 1994

The Macon Levee

The flood of 1994 in Macon caused water levels to rise high enough to destroy several homes and buildings. The Ocmulgee River flooded many of the neighborhoods and displaced tons of families. The flooding came as a result of Tropical Storm Alberto which made landfall along the Gulf Coast on July 4th. Due to the magnitude of the flood, most of the entire Middle Georgia area was isolated on that Wednesday. Conditions were so devastating and worsened when the flood waters caused by Alberto led to a breached levee near Central City Park. However, at the time many did not expect a problem with a broken levee This came as such a shock to middle Georgia, with governor Miller, at the time, quoted saying " Ive never seen anything like this, Georgia has never seen anything like this". It has such an impact even blocking Interstates 16 and 75.
